Kalakala, a ship of
a thousand years.
The Kalakala
Alliance Foundation (KAF), is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation, was
founded in December 2003 by Steve Rodrigues (President, KAF) and dba
"Lost Horizons" (LH), a for-profit company, registered in the State of
Washington. LH became donor under a Charitable Trust and contributed
the Kalakala and other artifacts to KAF (Trust beneficiary).
The Kalakala is the
"World's First Stream Line Ferry". KAF's mission is to preserve and
operate the Kalakala for perpetuity, provide her a National Landmark
site as her new permanent home port, and after all vessel and land
improvement debt service is dissolved KAF (under the Trust) shall
contribute the vessel and the landmark site onto a similar non-profit
entity (Port, City, State, or other similar non-profit organization)for
perpetuity.
LH contributed the
Kalakala to KAF under a charitable trust agreement in 2005, and the
first KAF mission was to research, find, and document over 100 years of
the Peabody Family history, including; the American Steam Ship Company,
Puget Sound Navigation Company (dba Black Ball Line, and any other
related maritime fleet history that operated within the Pacific and
Atlantic waterways that ever flew the Black Ball Flag (early 19Th
century) within regions; San Francisco Bay; Puget Sound Waterways;
Alaska and Canada; NY, NY and Liver Pool,England; and any other ferry
routes within the world until June 1, 1951.
The KAF 2005 report
was completed, and it opened new historical resource doorways that
enabled KAF future Kalakala preservation opportunities. KAF applied for
U.S. Department of Interior & State of Washington historic registers to
place the Kalakala as a Landmark of Historic Places. The Kalakala was
registered in 2006 and was placed onto both the National & State
registers.
2010 & future KAF
mission focuses access to public funds(National Parks Service Save
America's Treasures 2009 $700,000 cash grant pending review and press
release may be released by end of October or November 2009), gain local
government endorsements for accepting the Kalakala preservation project,
apply for non-profit 501 (C)(3) federal guaranteed American Reinvestment
and Recovery "Qualified Bank Loans", and other charitable
contributions. The 10,000 square feet of interior space within 5 decks
of the Kalakala are planned to sustain a solid, sound, and viable
business operation that return a profit after a 3 year maturity.
By August 2009 KAF
hired Select Contracts (SC) as KAF design-build-operate team member for
the Kalakala project. SC will provide professional services under a
3-year Kalakala consultancy agreement and a 5 year Kalakala Operating
contract. By October 1, 2009 SC completed the draft conceptual master
plan and a City of Port Angeles, Washington presentation. KAF is also
under current negotiations to purchase private waterfront lands to
create a marina and permanent moo rage site for the Kalakala. KAF has a
letter of interest from ERA/AECOM and will hire them to complete the
independent market and feasibility study after SC finalizes the Kalakala
and Marina resort master plan designs. The study will then be submitted
to secure a Kalakala bank loan. It Will also be submitted to the public
stakeholders, and will assure the community best land and business uses
of the site and Kalakala. It also will provide accurate new permanent
full time wage jobs, many other community economic impacts, and other
forecasts related to local and regional tax based new revenue created
from the project.
KAF future goals and
objectives are to save the Kalakala and create a National Landmark site,
so that, future generations will know; who we are, where we came from,
and why we should never simply retire, scrap, salvage, or have lost
nearly all of our physical ferry system maritime history evidences
forever.
And, during the 2010
Legislative session KAF will lobby governmental funding and maritime
heritage reforms.
KAF final mission is to
invest into the Kalakala, so that, she can serve our past, present,
children's children, and their children's children while sharing our KAF
efforts that have saved her. KAF report and documentary will share our
trust with future generations, and ask them to also accomplish and
invest into our future maritime heritage passions. KAF never will give
in nor give up on accomplishing the mission, and shall ultimately accept
the privileges given from LH that will assure a better quality of life
and millions of memories that will never be forgotten from the world
class assets that the Kalakala provided in 1935 and in our future as a
symbol of "Hope" and forever a significant world, national, state, and
local maritime heritage treasure!
