The Palm Room

KALAKALA's Palm Room - Asahel Curtis photograph, Washington State Historical Society

One of the most elegant areas of the Kalakala is the Palm Room. Like the great steamships of the North Atlantic, the Kalakala had a beautiful, open air room at the stern of the vessel. Located on the promenade deck, passengers could watch the sweep of Puget Sound cruise by from the wicker furniture and smell the gentle salt breezes of summer.

This part of the vessel took the brunt of the weather while in Alaska. Many of the stanchions had to be replaced after her return to Seattle. It is remarkable that the famed "turtle back" roof survived. Just aft of the Double Horseshoe Cafe, the Palm Room room affords spectacular views on three sides.
